Mary’s Lent Diary (Day 10)

I’m back.

After Jesus mentioned the woman’s husbands, it was her turn to change the subject…she started talking about worshipping God and how different people had different ideas of where the ‘right’ place to worship was.  Jesus told her that the place is not important, it is the attitude of the worshipper that counts.

The place is not important?  That’s not how I have always understood it.

I don’t think the woman could get her head around what Jesus was saying because she just said that the Messiah would come and, when He did, He would explain everything.

Then Jesus said something amazing – ‘I am the Messiah’

Wow, my son!  I have not heard him say that before. Imagine the person he tells being a Samaritan woman!  I don’t think that will have done him any favours with the Pharisees, nor will the fact that he is claiming to be the Messiah.

The woman definitely believed him, anyway.  She went straight back to the town were she lived, and told whoever would listen all about Jesus; that man she had met who had known everything she had ever done.

So lots of Samaritans went to see Jesus, they even persuaded him to stay with them for two days.  Lots of them really believed in him and who he is, and all because the woman introduced them to Jesus.  They were really pleased to meet him – they had believed the woman’s story but it was better that they actually heard Jesus themselves.  They told her that they now really believed that Jesus is the Saviour of the world.

Well, the Saviour bit links in with what the Shepherds were told when Jesus was born…I seem to be discovering more about my son every day!

An open door

The woman was not too keen to talk about personal things with Jesus.

When He mentioned her husbands, she changed the subject.

Perhaps it was a bit too close for comfort.

She ran off to tell everyone that He knew everything she’d ever done,

but she didn’t want to get into specifics with Jesus.

What about us? Do we share personal struggles with Him? Those things deep inside that no one knows?

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

Psalm 139: 13,14

He’s known us from the beginning.

He knows us now.

He knows us inside out.

When we share our problems and feelings and fears with Him,

we’re not telling Him anything He doesn’t know.

We won’t shock Him, or make Him turn away.

We are inviting Him in.

Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did!

John 4:29

The Samaritan woman invited people to meet Jesus.

Could we invite our ‘inmost being’ to meet Him?

Could we say to our uncertainties, worries, overwhelm:

Come and meet Jesus…

The people in the town heard about Jesus, and they went to meet Him.

What about us? Perhaps we go to church, and listen to sermons.

We hear about Jesus.

Do we also go and meet Him? During the week that follows church, do we meet with Jesus?

As we meet with Him, spending time with Him, we will share with Him more and more.

And we will find that it is safe to do so.

Will you meet with Him today?

Come and meet Jesus….

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for knowing me.

For loving me.

For never turning away.

I invite You in.

Amen
